The Writer's Partner: 1001 Breakthrough Ideas to Stimulate Your Imagination
Published in Paperback by Michael Wiese Productions (March, 2001)
Authors: Martin Roth and Bernie Brillstein
Average review score:

A favorite!
This is without a doubt my favorite writing/reference book. If I was on a desert island with just one writing book, this one would be it (and I have 2 copies). The many lists on a wide variety of genres makes it a perfect brainstorming tool you can use over and over for fiction or scripts.

Finally! A book that delivers!
I love this book! If you write ANY type of fiction, this is a great tool to have for those days slow days infront of a blank screen.

A compendium of quick and easy "things to do"
In The Writer's Partner: 1001 Breakthrough Ideas To Stimulate Your Imagination, television script writer Martin Roth draws upon his many years of experience and expertise to present a compendium of quick and easy "things to do" to get started with a writing project, or embellish one already underway. From ideas for character development and plotting, this invaluable resource goes on to address genre categories including science fiction, horror, romance, comedy, sports, crime, westerns, and more. A truly "user friendly" text is further enhanced with appendices on "Web Wordage"; "National Hockey League Teams"; and "Additional Sports League Official Offices". The Writer's Partner is a valuable and practical addition to any writer's reference shelf.

Writings for a Liberation Psychology
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (September, 1996)
Authors: Ignacio Martin-Baro, Adrianne Aron, Shawn Corne, and Elliot Mishler
Average review score:

revolutionary writings by a man of courage....
Yes. Canonize him. Martin-Baro gave his life to prove that psychology had more business than as an on-the-shelf academic discipline. Using its methods to highlight the misery of his El Salvadoran people, he demonstrated how powerful a psychology relevant to the needs of the oppressed can be. Very inspiring.

Canonize This Man, Please
Ignacio Martin-Baro is probably better known in the U.S. as one of the slain Jesuit priests of El Salvador than as the ingenious psychologist that he was. Aron and Corne do U.S. psychologists, who are more often than not barred by their lack of facility with the Spanish language from a large body of important psychological literature, a huge favor by editing this carefully chosen and lovingly prepared volume of his translated works. Because the writings they have selected span the period from 1974, shortly before Martin-Baro initiated graduate work at the University of Chicago, to 1989, when he was murdered, we as readers are able to observe the maturation of his perspective as well as the many ways he applied his psychological knowledge and training in what can only be described as a "limit situation"-- namely, El Salvador in the late l970s through the mid 1980s. In these works, Martin-Baro addressed several themes of increasing global significance, including the effects political repression on the human psyche, the effects of war on children, the relation between religious ideology and political activity, and the nature of industrial psychology from the perspective of the under- and unemployed. Of greatest significance to psychologists, however, were his overarching themes, namely, the collusive role of mainstream psychology in human oppression and the necessary role of the psychologist in human liberation. Borrowing from Freire's famed concept of conscientizacao, Martin-Baro demonstrated how psychologists can act as agents of the development of critical consciousness, both through their nurturance of individuals in the process of psychological healing and development and through their interventions, as privileged and powerful members of society, upon the diseased socio-economic/political system itself. Through their insightful, passionate, and well-researched commentary, Aron and Corne demonstrate that Martin-Baro indeed lived and died by his praxis, proving that psychology's current state of critical inertia is not a necessary condition. In my opinion, Martin-Baro is destined to become the patron saint of psychology--and, boy, does it need one.

A must reading for any caring, thinking human being!
This unique work opened my eyes to a topic that most of us have no idea about. A must read for every politcal science major, and for everyone who cares about our world.

Can't Put It Down
I loved this book!! Humor, suspense, a descriptive adventure
through a maze of emotion and intriguing detail. A wonderful
whodunnit! It has become one of my favorites.

An excellent mystery to keep you on the edge of your seat.
She elaborated the story very well. It was like you could actually see yourself in the mansion. She keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting to see whats happening next. There is a little bit of humor that mixes well into the story. The characters are described to leave nothing to the imagination. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

The ABC's of Raising Happy, Healthy Kids
Published in Paperback by Peak Peformance Publishing (05 June, 2000)
Authors: Melody Pritchard, Gigi Tomasek-Sage, and Martin Sage
Average review score:

great information
This is a great book with clear advice for any parent, whether you have young children, or older ones. The fascinating thing about this book is that the advice given can be applied to work colleagues, parents, friends as well as your kids!

Buy it - this book works.

Dynamite in a Small package
I loved this book because it has many simple, "how to" type instructions for parents on raising a happy family. I am an educator/trainer myself and I appreciate that the book quickly reduces complex child raising information into a usable, fun format. It also is the kind of inspiration parents need on their bedside table for those days when nothing is working. The operating system in this book seems simple, but you will find yourself reading it again to get the depth. Taking punishment out, and putting natural consequences into parenting is a courageous, high integrity way to live. The book shows us how to do this, with great tools for parents and all of us who love and care for children. Bravo!!

Acid Dreams: The CIA, LSD, and the Sixties Rebellion
Published in Hardcover by Grove Press (January, 1985)
Author: Martin A. Lee
Average review score:

Turn on, tune in & drop out with the CIA, Owsely and . . .
You won't here these stories on Fox News or Salon. This book is a superb piece of cultural anthropology and an awesome read. Remember: Owsely, the Farm, the Haight & the Brotherhood of Eternal Love, CIA suicides and the Edgware Arsenal? You get all of the foregoing plus great investigative journalism and a contact high. Part one: the CIA & LSD (You won't hear these stories on Fox News) is worth the price alone. If you can't remember which American General demanded that the Congress flood the NY subway system with LSD gas, you can find the answer here.

Tim Leary, Billy Hitchcock, Milbrook, Alan Watts, pink owsley, The Brotherhood of Eternal Love, Clair Booth Luce! (It's all here.) A finely written work of contemporary history from the LSD user's point of view. If you have an interest in LSD or the CIA or the 60s there is no finer book to read. This book is not a comic book or "like far out, man," treatment of LSD. It combines meticulous investigative journalism and cultural anthropolgy submitted and is a awesome read.

And it's all true! If you were there go back and come inside where it's warm for a while. If you weren't there, it's gonna blow your mind.

Anybody remember Ronald Hadley Stark?

An interesting and informative read.
Whether you are an aging tripster, a Wall Street conservative, or a high school student, Acid Dreams will grab your interest from the first page. I found this book a very informative illumination of the 50s CIA research(scandalous and horrifying; this subject in itself could fill many books)the 1960s, and Hippie culture. Very well written, it never gets dry or boring. I couldn't put it down, and reccomend it to anyone looking for a fun, exciting, and enlightening read.

The Aconceptual Mind: Heideggerian Themes in Holistic Naturalism (Advances in Consciousness Research, Vol 11)
Published in Paperback by John Benjamins Publishing Co. (July, 1998)
Authors: Pauli Pylkko and Paul Pylkko
Average review score:

Well written combo of abstract Martin & grounded cogsci.
Pauli engaging, converstional writing style makes the application of Heidegger's toughest themes to current cognitive science research clear and exciting.

A very controversial book!
This is a very controversial book, one which is not frightened to deal with some of the mind blowing consequences of holistic naturalism and quantum theory. The most controversial chapter deals with Fascism. Pylkko blows open wide the present debate on whether or not Martin Heidegger was a Fascist - a point that Pylkko says is obvious - by asking us not to simply re-review Heidegger's writings but asking us moreover to ask what Fascism REALLY is. For Pylkko, Fascism isn't merely about anti-semiticism and war-mongering - although they were 2 of its later consequences - but about a radical conceptual relativism! In a word, cultures can't ultimately understand one another; and this is more complex than Wittgenstein's notion of "forms of life", according to which one needs to understand the lifeworld of people not just their language. But the driving force behind Pylkko's argument isn't mere opinion, or yet more phenomenology, but a scientific view, a sort of meta! physics, or ultimately anti-metaphysics, based upon notions within the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum theory.

New Age bookstores are full of shelves devoted to developing social models derived from quantum physics, but Pylkko's book is the only book on this issue which is based upon a highly sophisticated philosophical argument. I highly recommend this book.

Adventism and the American Republic: The Public Involvement of a Major Apocalyptic Movement
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Tennessee Pr (April, 2001)
Authors: Douglas Morgan and Martin E. Marty
Average review score:

Fending off the "time of trouble"
As a former Seventh-day Adventist and current "card-carrying member of the ACLU" I have long pondered many of the themes dealt with by this very interesting book. I think Morgan and Marty deal with the subject-matter in a very unique and fairly non-offensive way and get quite a bit about Adventism right, although there are some errors. You guys know Adventist is pronounced with an emphasis on the first syllable and not the second, right? As in AD-vent-ist, not Ad-VENT-ist.

I think some of the more educated, liberal, and objective Adventists I know (especially ones secure in their faith) would enjoy this book. People interested in the intersection of religion and politics in general would definitely find it an easy, entertaining read.

I plan on passing it on.

An American Tale - God and Country
"Faith-based organizations?" The odd term had not yet entered the media lexicon. American politicians had only seen a glimmer of the power offered by open alliances with conservative religious groups. But, in this adventurous probe of the odd-couple pairing of Seventh-day Adventism, a quintessentially American institution, and the Republican party, Dr. Morgan opens a clear panoramic view of one church's struggle with these reformation-esque issues.

Separation of Church and State? Money to do "good" things? Where do well-meaning people draw the lines? How do they decide? What goes on behind closed doors - in the cloistered halls of power on Capitol Hill and in the hushed offices of ecclesiastical politics?

Doug Morgan's "Adventism and the American Republic" is a scrupulously documented look at one church's awkward lurching toward civic engagement. The view ranges from sweet to painful and back again. But Doug's description carries the reader through the arc with a sense of being there -- in the rooms, reading the letters and watching the frustrating twists, embarrassing turns, and occasional successes in this theological/political pretzel.

If you've every wondered what "Faith Based" means for the future of American social or religious institutions, this book is a must read. If you don't care about church and state, but like a curious American tale, it's even better.

Somebody should make the movie!

Agnes Martin Writings
Published in Paperback by Distributed Art Publishers (December, 1993)
Authors: Dieter Schwartz and Agnes Martin
Average review score:

A wonderful voice behind the paintings
How many great painters have been eloquent on their work or methods, or, for that matter, on art or culture in general? In recent times, only Ad Reinhardt compares with Agnes Martin, who has that rarest of gifts among the non-literary, a voice. In a series of articles, some of which were apparently talks given to art students, she delves into consciousness, creativity, judgment, personal development, self-assurance, transcendence, meaning, value. She takes on the big subjects with language that is gloriously unpretentious in a style epigrammatic and occasionally poetic.

Visiting an exhibition of her pencil-grid paintings a few years ago, I experienced the transformative power of her paradoxically simple physical means to create shimmering, magical spaces. The staying power of that work has inclined me to believe that she's one of the greatest painters of the second half of the twentieth century. This book of her writings is a delightful enhancement to that discovery.

Quiet and Quite...
...lovely and profound.

Martin's work here and on the canvas is deceptively simple. Not really about silence but about the possibility of grace and knowledge within.

This book recommended for all artists and lovers of art, life, and silence.
